LISA Raises Industry Awareness Through Partnership with New Documentary Film

The Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA) is happy to share news with you about an upcoming media production that will cast a positive light on the life insurance settlement industry through personal, compelling, and humbling stories.

Cashing Out--to be released in September by The New Yorker--is a short, historical-style documentary that explores the origins of “viatical settlements” and what is now the life settlement industry. The film shares perspectives on how marginalized communities and those living with HIV/AIDS sold their policies for cash and the intimate and complex stories of our field of work.

LISA felt it was important to partner with the makers of Cashing Out to help showcase our industry in a positive light and use the film to amplify uplifting experiences that stem from life settlements. Holding executive producer credits for the film, LISA is proud to announce that Cashing Out has qualified for the 2026 Academy Awards.

In partnership with the National AIDS Memorial, an early screening of the film will take place in June at the New York City LGBT Community Center. If anyone located in the area is interested in attending, please let us know and we'll share further information. (Additionally, read more about the event logistics here.)

We are excited about the educational opportunities this film will bring for our industry, including how we've grown over time and where we're headed. Cashing Out helps to humanize our industry while celebrating and bringing a positive light to our work.
