2023 Alan H. Buerger Leadership Award Winner
The Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA), the nation's oldest and largest organization representing the life settlement industry, awarded the Alan H. Buerger (AHB) Leadership Award to Phil Loy, Managing Director of Jade Mountain Partners and Founder of AVS Underwriting, LLC, at its 29th Annual Life Settlement Conference in Chicago on October 23.Phil Loy is a pioneer in the medical underwriting and life settlement industries and a longstanding member of LISA. He founded AVS in 1994 and built the company into the leading medical underwriting firm for the life settlement industry.
“Phil brought professionalism to the industry. He did things the “right way” even when competitors were taking aggressive actions to take market share from him,” said Neal Jacobs, Managing Director of Finance at Coventry and a LISA Board member. “This was critical in building credibility for our industry and enabling the industry to survive and then thrive as it attracted significant amounts of institutional capital.”
Mr. Loy also brought those leadership qualities to his work with LISA, said outgoing LISA Board Chair, Sherry Duarte. “He has actively supported the association throughout the years,” Duarte said. “You can always count on him to help when needed.”
Mr. Loy's participation and leadership has been an asset to both LISA and life settlement industry participants for over three decades.
The AHB Leadership award honors industry leaders who have made significant contributions to support the development and growth of LISA and the life settlement marketplace. LISA's Board of Directors renamed its Industry Leadership Award to the Alan H. Buerger Leadership award in 2022, in honor of the Coventry co-founder and Executive Chairman and former Chairman of LISA. Buerger was the winner of the LISA Leadership Award in 2021.
