2023 LISA Leadership Announced
At a Member’s Meeting held on Sunday, October 2, the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA) announced the results of its annual Board of Directors election. One new Director will begin a three-year term, while two Directors will serve additional three-year terms. Each of these industry leaders are committed to advancing LISA’s efforts to promote the development, integrity, and reputation of the life settlement industry.
“The life settlement industry leaders that comprise LISA’s Board of Directors are uniquely positioned to drive consensus within our ongoing activities and impact market growth,” said Bryan Nicholson, LISA’s Executive Director. “I look forward to working with this Board of Directors to further advance LISA’s mission.”
The new and returning LISA Board members, who will serve three-year terms, include:
• Brian Casey, Partner & Co-Chair of Insurance Practice, Locke Lord LLP, Inc., elected to an additional term;
• Nate McCormick, President, Magna Life, and;
• Steven Shapiro, President and CEO, Q Capital Strategies, LLC, elected to an additional term.
In addition, it was announced that Sherry Duarte, Managing Director of Fifth Season Financial, will serve as LISA’s next Chair. Ms. Duarte will succeed John Welcom, Founder and CEO of Welcome Funds, whose term as LISA Chair is expiring. Mr. Welcom will transition to the role of Immediate Past Chair and remain a member of LISA’s Executive Committee. The election of LISA’s remaining officers will occur during the first meeting of the newly seated Board of Directors.
2022 Alan H. Buerger Award Winners
The Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA), the nation’s oldest and largest organization representing the life settlement industry, awarded the Alan H. Buerger (AHB) Leadership Award to Brian Casey and M. Bryan Freeman in October 2022.The AHB Leadership award honors industry leaders who have made significant contributions to support the development and growth of LISA and the life settlement marketplace.
Mr. Casey, a partner at the law firm Locke Lord LLP and Co-Chair of their Insurance Regulatory and Transactional practice group, is a current LISA Board member and former Secretary/Treasurer of the organization. Mr. Casey’s counsel has been an asset to both LISA and life settlement industry participants for over two decades.
Mr. Freeman, the founder, President, and Managing Member of Habersham Funding, is a life settlement industry pioneer and former four-term LISA President. Mr. Freeman’s role in advocating on behalf of the industry before organization’s like NCOIL and NAIC was vital to the industry’s growth.
LISA’s Board of Directors renamed its Industry Leadership Award to the Alan H. Buerger Leadership award in 2022, in honor of the Coventry co-founder and Executive Chairman and former Chairman of LISA. Buerger was the winner of the LISA Leadership Award in 2021.
LISA Renames Annual Award to Alan H. Buerger Leadership Award
ATLANTA, Ga., Oct. 2, 2022 — At its annual life settlement conference, the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA) announced that its annual leadership award will be named the Alan H. Buerger Leadership Award. Last year, Mr. Buerger received the inaugural leadership award.Mr. Buerger co-founded Coventry in 1982 with Constance Buerger and is currently its Executive Chairman. Under Mr. Buerger’s visionary leadership, Coventry created the secondary market for life insurance, giving life insurance a fair market value, and coined the term “life settlement.” In creating a secondary market for life insurance, Coventry, as market leader, has changed the face of financial services by making insurance more powerful, more flexible, and more valuable. In 2015, the company launched Coventry Direct to expand Coventry’s educational initiatives to policy owners and their families.
“I could not think of a more appropriate way to acknowledge your leadership and your efforts to grow this industry,” said Bryan Nicholson, Executive Director of LISA.
