Lou Cremers

Lou Cremers

Job title:

Manager Translation Services

Company name:

Oce Technologies

Company GILT efforts involvement:

Translation Services at Oce Technologies was set up in 1996 with the introduction of Machine Translation in an effort to reduce translation costs, shorten release cycles and improve consistency. Soon afterwards a Translation Memory was added. More recently attention has shifted to the document production cycle to further improve the documentation and localisation process with the introduction of a Controlled English Checker and an XML document management system which improves the quality and effiency of the authoring process. Gradually documentation has been shifted from DTP environments to XML with an automated publication process.

Over the years Translation Services has developed an automated workflow system which enables standardised and automated handling of translation jobs. All documentation is converted to a few standard documentation types, analysed against a single normalised translation memory for each required language, metrics as cost and duration are calculated and finally a standardised translation package is sent to the localisation vendor in one automated workflow. Other developments include a TerminologyExtraction program which allows allows quick terminology updates using a combination of the MT system's new word search and the bilingual data in our large translation memories. An intranet application allows both headquarters and operating countries to browse terminology, memories or request translations which are routed to the workflow system. In this setup Translation Services translated in 2002 more than 1.5 million source words including documentation, web contents, e-learning material and software in up to 17 languages, saving more than 60% on traditional translation costs.

Claudia L. Holanda

Claudia Holanda

Job title:

NLS and Globalization Product Manager

Company name:

Information Builders, Inc.

Company GILT efforts involvement:

Information Builders' primary line of business is BI (Business Intelligence) software development and support. During 5 years with Information Builders, Claudia has been involved in various aspects of GILT efforts:

  • Created and trained a National Language Support Quality Assurance department to meet ISO9002 guidelines for test plans, specifications, test cases and automation
  • Expanded and trained an in-house translation group with new staff, latest tools and TM management
  • Produced 13 different Localized software releases
  • In late January 2003 the company released its first ever sim ship software with 6 languages - WebFOCUS 5. It was a difficult task which involved many changes in the domestic development process. Common Globalization concepts such as usage of variables for text and graphics is now vastly used by our programmers.

Claudia designed a dynamic language switch feature in the software enabling the user to toggle the User Interface. She also added a single and multi-language installation program bundle.

As an International company with offices worldwide, Information Builders has received only positive feedback on the quality and turn-around time availability for this truly Global release. The ROI couldn't come in a better time as the company will be able to market and sell the software internationally while English-speaking customers will receive their versions. It's important to note that they also cut cost with QA and packaging time and that WebFOCUS 5 is the only multilingual BI software available in the market. Future service packs to this release will include the addition of other languages, full UNICODE support and translated on-line help files.
