In Memory: Luis Garcia-Barrio
Linguist, localizer and contributor to the GILT industry...
Luis was born in Herrera de Pisuerga, a small town in northern Spain in 1940. He completed his higher education in Philadelphia, and received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He lived and worked in the Philadelphia area for the rest of his life. He would have been 62 on June 28th, but died suddenly from a heart attack on May 9th. As well as having a brilliant linguistic mind, Luis had a thirst for knowledge about the modern world of communications. He could solve almost any problem in computerized language processing. When a document couldn't be published using available DTP packages, Luis always found a way to debug the problem. He also shared his knowledge generously with his colleagues, training a magnificent staff at A2Z Global. His writing on points of grammar influenced the Real Academia Española, Spain's leading authority on Spanish grammar and usage Luis was also a connoisseur of fine wine, an opera enthusiast, and an accomplished photographer. He is survived by his son, Manuel, also an excellent Spanish translator (I wonder why!) and his wife, Connie, a Spanish professor in Philadelphia who also speaks fluent Chinese. Luis would always say, "No llores por haberse puesto el sol, que las lagrimas no dejan ver lo bonito de las estrellas"*. A Luis M. Garcia-Barrio Memorial Fund has been established to aid students who travel abroad to study languages. Contributions may be sent to: Luis M. Garcia-Barrio Travel Fund
