Director’s letter

Michael Anobile

Dear LISA Members and Newsletter Readers,

Mike Anobile

The previous issue of the Newsletter was distributed via the Web to members and other corporate sub-scribers. However, since we discovered that not all of you took the time to download the file, this issue was mailed to you-electronically! We currently have over 600 subscribers to the Newsletter, and as circulation continues to grow, we are investigating more cost-effective ways of delivering hardcopies to all subscribers. Meanwhile, though, we have invested the mail-cost savings into public relations and the redesigning of the LISA Website.

In line with this year's publication and industry promotion strategies, we are expanding readership of LISA produced articles and news briefs by forming a closer relationship with Language International (LI), John Benjamins Publishing Co., The Netherlands. Beginning with LI's April issue, LISA articles will be featured under the LISA Industry Focus heading. In June, the LISA logo will be displayed on LI's colophon page as one of the journal's sponsors. This collaboration is one of many planned for this year in order to publicize the localization industry's impact on vertical market sectors and international business.

LISA will be providing LI and other periodicals with executive-level articles highlighting the localization business trends and the management challenges confronting today's global enterprises. Our first such article was Rory Cowan's "Globalization is an Enterprise Issue". This article can be found on the LISA Website at http://www.lisa.unige.ch/newsletter/industryfocus_articles.html.

The administration's public relations strategy is beginning to show results. In March LISA played a central role in a 30-minute television program produced by Cap Weinberger's World Business Review, entitled "Creating International Software". The program was funded by Rory Cowan of LionBridge, Henri Broekmate of Trados and David Brooks of Microsoft. In a relaxed, panel session environment we had the opportunity to explain to millions of business-news and in-flight viewers why localization is today's global business imper-ative. The international viewing dates can be found in the "LISA in the News" section of this Newsletter. LISA is also negotiating follow-on programs so that other members and industry issues can be featured in this popular newscast. Please contact me if you are interested in participating in subsequent broadcasts.

The industry continues its consolidation trend. The ongoing mergers and acquisitions in the service and technology sectors confirm the increasingly critical role that localization plays in global commerce. It is LISA's responsibility to publicize the strategic importance of localization in areas like education, language technol-ogy, worldwide e-commerce and international trade. The LISA Website is being restructured to advance these and other related issues. Please let us know how you think we can help your business and the industry to grow.

LISA is your association. What it becomes and the services it provides are the direct result of your input and support.

Sincerely
Mike Anobile signature
