3-5 April, 1995, Hosted by: GECAP, L&L Informatie, & Logos Computer Translations: “Translation Tools and the Localization Process—The Business Issues”

First in a series of LISA Forums in 1995 focusing on localization technology and process evaluation, this meeting concentrates on the business case for language processing tools and how to plan for an implementation procedure that is geared for profitable results. The program will feature panel discussions and presentations by senior business managers from, among others, companies like Bureau of Translation Services, Compaq, Ericsson Data Systems, GECAP, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP Germany and, Trados.

  • Can the Translation & Localization Process be Profitable?--A Publisher's Perspective
    This topic addresses the perception clients have of localization vendors and will cover negotiation strategies, logistics and, establishing realistic productivity expectations.
  • Evaluation of Software Localization Tools
    A localization vendor's catalogue of criteria for the correct choice of tools, and evaluation of various localization tool applications based on this catalogue.
  • The Economics of "Front-End Tools" for Machine Translation
    Is MT cost effective in the s/w translation and localization process? What value do authoring tools add? What applications, tools and technologies justify an efficient production process?
  • Microsoft and Eurolang's Optimizer--A Review of Microsoft's Implementation Plan
    Much controversey surrounds Microsoft's decision to use Optimizer as part of their global product localization strategy. What are the results so far, and, what is planned for the future?
  • Software Engineering and Testing for Fully Outsourced Localization Projects
    The main areas covered include a background on the changing philosophy towards outsourcing, its pros and cons and a recent case study.
  • Localization QA Metrics--A Report on the LISA Quality Metrics SIG
    The roles and checkpoints for vendors and publishers to follow so that localized products can consistently meet the needs and expectations of its customers
  • Benchmarking MT Systems in a Production Environment
    An MT user reveals their decision making process, business requirements and procedures to ensure an efficient production process.
  • SIG meetings and follow-up sessions covering:
    • Vendor Outsourcing
    • A Standard Bidding Platform
    • Translation Memories/Terminology Ownership
    • Quality Metrics
  • Product Exhibition
    Demonstrations of proprietary and commercial tools are scheduled. Contact LISA Administration if you are interested in demonstrating your solution. All proprietary tool developers are especially encouraged. An information table for all members is also provided.
