Why LISA Must Succeed
A Commentary
In the highly competitive IT industry, you may ask yourself what you have to gain by participating in an open standards organization. Sure, you've probably adopted industry-standard computer systems long ago--for computer hardware that made sense. But in terms of such matters as organizational strategy, quality assurance, terminology, and technological advancement, do you really want to level the playing field with your competitors? Your natural reaction is "probably not." But you probably realize that product internationalization and localization is a very young field challenged by the rapid globalization of worlds markets. In the IT sector, we all realize that the mechanisms aren't in place to handle the massive localization jobs required by software houses. That's why LISA was formed. You may also perceive that standardizing and refining these processes is a win-win situation for everyone involved: software houses can devote more energies to developing innovative software and translation companies can handle larger translation projects. "A rising tide lifts all boats," as the saying goes. After all, if LISA members can collectively streamline the product localization process, they will be in an excellent position to capitalize on the product localization requirements of the far larger business world outside of the IT industry. A commitment to LISA--and that is what it represents--could return your company substantial dividends in the future. LISA came into existence because of these factors and because of this vision. The LISA mission--embraced by at least some of its members--is too important to allow it to be compromised by internal politics and short-term thinking. In order for it to live up to its name and its promise, it must by definition evolve into an openly- structured organization which reflects the mutual interests of its forward-thinking members, both large andsmall. If LISA fails to do this, it will no longer be able to justify its' existence. And if LISA fails, you can be sure that a more strategically- minded group of people will step into this breach. LISA therefore represents a golden opportunity for its members to help define and lead this industry. |
