Globalization Testing – with an Emphasis on Translatability Testing and Pseudo Translation

Globalization of software requires much more than translation. The software has to be properly designed, enabled, tested and translated. This workshop will provide an overview of an efficient approach to the globalization testing of software. The Why, What, When and Who of globalization testing will be explained and best practices will be suggested.
One of the aspects of globalization testing is translatability testing - determining if software can be translated. Attempting to translate software into multiple languages before it is translatable can be an expensive and frustrating experience for everyone involved so it is important to test translatability beforehand. Translatability testing allows the development team to fix translatability issues in the software before it is sent off for translation, resulting in significant translation cost savings. A translatability testing methodology called pseudo translation will be presented and the technique explained.

Following 50 years of research and development, machine translation (MT) is now arriving at the workspace of localization and customer support professionals. New promises in translation automation are made on the basis of statistical approaches. Translation memories, accumulated over more than a decade of localization activities, represent a new value as training data for MT. Statistical machine translation (SMT) is making serious inroads in everyday applications such as search, multilingual support and localization. The list of providers includes big names such as Microsoft, IBM and Google but also dedicated technology providers such as Language Weaver and Asia Online.
Managing Enterprise Terminology – Principles, Methods and Business Objectives

Key product terms must be sanity checked, catalogued, documented, fed through the localization process, and repurposed for future use. Learn the fundamentals of terminology management that can help your company avoid errors, save time, and improve customer satisfaction and brand image. The presenter will share knowledge gained from ten years experience as a terminologist for IBM, a university lecturer on terminology, and a member of LISA and ISO terminology standards committees.
The workshop will include practical exercises to be conducted online. Participants are requested to bring a laptop with a wireless card, if possible, in order to participate in these exercises.

European GlobalSight Community Meeting

Since the launch of the GlobalSight Open Source Initiative (www.globalsight.com), over 130 participants have signed-up to join the community and learn more about how they may collaborate to innovate and contribute to the development of a flexible, sustainable and open source TMS that addresses the true needs of the industry.
The first European GlobalSight Community Meeting will address the critical success factors for the future of the Initiative in the GILT industry. This workshop will begin with a comprehensive demo and competitive analysis of GlobalSight, a product roadmap for open source migration and program/community updates. Further discussions will involve panels on the current state of TMS, adherence to industry standards, integration with key business processes, and open source community models that best leverage knowledge and innovation in the industry.
