Translation Memory Survey 2002
Overview
Translation Memory usage adoption has accelerated considerably since its adoption. Since the introduction of the Translation Memory eXchange (TMX) Standard in 1997, the growth of Translation Memory in companies have become a key asset for GILT companies to compete effectively.
Objectives
The Survey's objective was to identify current Translation Memory usage, trends, activities performed on TM databases, pervasiveness of open standards adoption and to distill future trends.
Methodology
The survey was conducted on-line at the LISA website in August through October 2002. Respondents were asked to answer 9 questions about their usage of Translation Memory and experiences with TM. Companies of all sizes were invited to participate and over 134 companies responded.
Respondents
The survey respondents were comprised of companies who are translating greater than 50 million source words per year (23%), 20-50 million (12%), 10-20 million (14%), 5-10 million (12%) and up to 5 million (29%).
Survey Questionnaire
Questions were structured to investigate respondent's experience with Translation Memory, usage of Open Standards and identify key obstacles in the adopting open Translation Memory standards. Key questions were also focused the operations that were being performed on TM databases and also gauge the industry's willingness to trade TM data.
