TBX Specification

The TBX specification can be downloaded in two formats, as follows:

  • Winzip file containing the specification in Microsoft Word format with associated files (see below). This version is the official OSCAR standard until replaced by the forthcoming ISO-standard revision. Download the standard as a WinZip or GZIP archive.
  • XHTML format as submitted to ISO in 2007. This version is simpler to read and use and served as the basis for forthcoming revision of TBX. View this file online (opens a new window).

The two versions are identical except for minor stylistic and editorial changes.

April, 2008. The newest version of TBX, which incorporates changes based on feedback from OSCAR and ISO member bodies is available for download in PDF format here. Note that the period for public comment on this version of TBX has ended and that this version should not be used for production purposes as changes will be made prior to release by ISO.

File list

The official TBX specification in Word format comes in a package of various files, as listed below. Note that all of these files have been integrated into one file in the HXTML version:

  1. TBXspecV1j.DOC The TBX specification in Microsoft Word (.doc) format.
  2. TBXcsV01.xsd The TBX core structure in W3C Schema (XSD) format.
  3. TBXcdv04.dtd The TBX core structure in DTD format.
  4. TBXdsV1-0.xml The schema for XCS (eXternal Constraint Specification) files.
  5. TBXDv04.xml The default XCS file (default list of data categories in TBX).
  6. encodingGuidelines.htm a companion to the file TBX_DataCategoriesV1.htm that gives example encodings of every category that can be included in TBX. It should be put in the same directory as the TBX_DataCategoriesV1.htm file for hyperlinking to work correctly.
  7. TBX_DataCategoriesV1.htm a file referred to in the specification that defines the contents of the XCS file.
  8. tbxxcsdtd.dtd DTD for the data categories (XCS file).
