Jason Arnsparger is a Localization Project Manager at CaridianBCT, Inc., a medical device manufacturer based in Lakewood, Colorado where he is responsible for managing the localization of technical documentation, training materials and web content in up to 22 languages. For the past 5 years Jason has helped to create and continuously improve the localization processes and project management methodologies at CaridianBCT, including leading the implementation and administration of the company’s GIM system. Jason has been involved in various aspects of linguistics and culture for the past 10 years and has a B.A. in Modern Languages emphasizing in Spanish language and culture.

 

Steven Atkin

Chief Globalization Architect, Globalization Center of Competency, IBM

As Chief Globalization Architect for IBM’s Software Group, Dr. Atkin specializes in multinational expert systems, global business process optimization, and standard-setting for agile software development.

Before leading IBM’s business transformation around lean globalization and translation processes, Dr. Atkin led OS/2 globalization services, was the globalization architect for Java OS, and co-launched IBM’s Shanghai globalization laboratory.

His publications have appeared in IEEE Software and Multilingual Computing, and he regularly speaks at Unicode and other technical conferences. He holds a BS in Physics and an MS and PhD in Computer Science, emphasizing programming language theory, multilingual text processing, and functional languages.

 

Berry Braster

Director, North American Operations, Tedopres International

Berry Braster is the Director of Tedopres' North American operations, which is based in Austin, Texas. Tedopres provides translation and technical documentation services to various industries, and is headquartered in the Netherlands. Berry, fluent in 4 languages, holds a BA in International Marketing Management from the University of Amsterdam and has a background in international business and marketing. Before joining Tedopres, Berry was the Marketing/Sales Director for an organization specialized in quality assurance and regulatory affairs in Washington, DC. He has been with Tedopres for 8 years, during which he managed the implementation of controlled languages with companies in various industries, including software, medical, aerospace, military, automotive, machinery and semiconductor.

 

Stephen Brennan

Senior Vice President, Symantec Corporation

Stephen Brennan is vice president of Shared Engineering Services and based in Dublin. He moved from Lotus 15 years ago to open the localisation department for Symantec. His remit now extends beyond Localisation into International Product Engineering, Information Content Strategy and User Interface Design for the company. Stephen's organisation has several hundered staff, distributed across the globe with offices in Japan, China, India, Poland, Ireland and the United States.

Will Burgett

Will Burgett is a localization program manager at Intel Corporation responsible for localization strategy and translation automation. He has over 25 years of experience at Electro Scientific Industries and Intel Corporation working in various management roles including localization, technical publications, human factors engineering, OEM programs and product development. Will is Chairman of the TAUS Data Association and a certified PMP with PMI. He has been a guest speaker at several professional conferences and forums including Localization World, Society for Technical Communication, TAUS, and the Global Support Summit.

 

Yves Champollion

Founder and Chief Architect, Wordfast

Yves Champollion was born 1956 in Paris, France; he is related to the famous Aegyptologist J-F Champollion. He got into the computing craze of the eighties, produced various pieces of software (such as "Le Tableur Comptable", an iconoclastic spreadsheet designed for accountants), then got into free-lance translation then into programming translation tools such as Wordfast – all for the sheer love and pleasure of it. Hobbies include traveling and learning languages (after French, Latin, German and English taught by the Fathers of Saint Vincent's College, to whom his heartfelt gratitude is hereby expressed, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian were added, as well as some Japanese and, last but not least, Shangana, a Zulu-related language of Southern Mozambique, where he sponsors a secondary school).

During his 12 years at Moravia, Roman held a number of production and managerial positions in the area of localization, testing and engineering.

Heidi has more than 20 years experience in the international localization and language technology industries. She is a founder of Cross Language, a privately owned consulting and systems integration company dedicated to translation automation technology. The company brings together a team of professionals with expertise in process engineering, computational linguistics, knowledge management, business automation and localization. Founded in 2002, Cross Language is now a leader in independent translation automation solutions and works for a growing number of global companies.

Heidi is familiar with the evolution of the industry from CAT tools to the newer globalization technologies, including workflow systems, machine translation and hybrid translation solutions. She has created and worked with international teams from different nationalities throughout Europe and the United States. Heidi is based in Ghent, Belgium and was educated in Belgium and Germany. Patricia Egan

Instructor, Technical Communication, University of California at Berkeley Extension

Patricia Egan, M.S., has worked in technical and financial communications since 1992. She is a member of the Society for Technical Communication, Project Management Institute, and Information Architecture Institute, and has participated in LISA Forums at the Lessius Hogeschool and in San Francisco. Her interests in international communication emanate from her lifelong study of Esperanto and service on the board of directors of the Universala Esperanto-Asocio/New York, a nongovernmental organization in consultative relations with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Since 2004, she has been an instructor in technical communication at the University of California Berkeley Extension. Her research interests include the value of technical editing, technical communication for international audiences, and the role of technical documentation in regulatory compliance. She received her master of science degree from New Jersey Institute of Technology and her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

He has recently served as a senior software engineer in the Google Internationalization Team, working on the Google Localization Framework. Vishal Gupta

Regine Herzog

Regine Herzog holds a university degree in Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies from Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz/Germersheim, Germany and a Localization Certification from California State University, Chico.

Since 1996 she has been working for the software industry, in the areas of technical documentation, software localization, website design, and user training. In her current position as Information Development Lead she is responsible for the creation and localization of user and technical documentation as well as user interface texts and help systems. Fred Hollowood

Director R&D Language Services, Symantec Corporation

Fred Hollowood is the Director for Research and Deployment within Symantec’s global localization department based at the Blanchardstown site in Dublin. His career in localization commenced in Xerox Welwyn Garden in 1988 and has held a variety of positions in the industry both on the publisher and vendor side culminating in his appointment to Symantec in 1997. He currently runs a research team covering language technology research for the company. He currently has a post-doctoral research engineer and additionally, three Ph.D. students within DCU to further research in the area of controlled language (CL) and machine translation (MT).

Tony Jewtushenko

Tony Jewtushenko's 22 year career in the software industry spans the entire spectrum of the software development lifecycle and is coupled with strong people and product management skills. Tony is recognized as an industry expert in software localization & globalization with regular speaking engagements at industry events. He was a key contributor to dozens of releases of successful commercial software products including Lotus 1-2-3 and Notes, Oracle JDeveloper and iDS. His multinational work experience spans USA, Europe, Middle East and Asia.

Prior to joining Product Innovator, Ltd. in 2005, Tony was Principal Product Manager for Oracle's Application Development Tools specializing in JDeveloper and TranslationHub. Before joining Oracle Corporation in 2000, Tony worked in a number of software engineering and project management roles during his decade long tenure with IBM/ Lotus Development Corporation. Tony also held a number of IT roles with AEW, Inc., and Applications Systems Corporation.

Tony has published and presented technical papers and is active in software industry standards groups. He is the founding and present chairman of the OASIS XLIFF Technical Committee, a founding member of the OASIS Translation Web Services Technical Committee, and was an Irish national delegate to the ISO JTC1 Web Services Study Group. Tony studied Mathematics, with concentration in Computer Science, at Boston University.

 

Jennifer Linton

XML/CMS Project Manager, CaridianBCT

Jennifer Linton is the XML and CMS Project Manager at CaridianBCT in Lakewood, Colorado USA. Between 2003 to 2007, Jennifer was a senior consultant at Comtech Services, during which time she authored the Introduction to DITA: A User Guide to the Darwin Information Typing Architecture. She also worked with many companies implementing DITA- and XML-based authoring environment and content management solutions. In 2006, Jennifer authored an O’Reilly short cut manual titled Beyond Schemas: Planning Your XML Model.

Currently, Jennifer supports CaridianBCT’s move to XML authoring and content management in the technical communications and training departments. Kenneth (Sandy) McKethan, Jr. is a globalization project manager with IBM based at Research Triangle Park, NC, USA. He is a foreign language Kenneth (Sandy) McKethan, Jr. is currently a software development project manager with IBM based at Research Triangle Park, NC, USA, having recently completed 10 years as a globalization project manager in IBM’s Tivoli division. Dr. Sharon O’Brien

Lecturer, Dublin City University

Dr. Sharon O'Brien obtained her PhD in 2006 from Dublin City University

(DCU) on the topic of Controlled Language and Post-Editing of Machine Translation output. Throughout her studies, she received research funding from the DAAD, Austrian Government, Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology, Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland and the Office for the Vice-President for Research at DCU. Her primary research interests include Machine Translation, controlled language, post-editing, Translation Technology usage in general and localisation. She worked as a language technology consultant for several years in the localisation industry. She is a PI in the newly set-up Centre for Next Generation Localisation, as well as a member of the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies at DCU. Her teaching centres around, French and German specialised translation, localisation, translation theory, research methods and interpreting.

 

Dr. Minako O’Hagan

Senior Lecturer, Dublin City University

Dr Minako O'Hagan is Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies and a member of the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies at Dublin City University. Her research interest includes computer-aided translation, virtual reality, localisation and globalisation of Japanese popular culture, including anime and video games. She is the author of The Coming Industry of Teletranslation (O'Hagan, 1996) and co-author of Translation-mediated Communication in a Digital World (O'Hagan & Ashworth, 2002).

Rebecca Ray is a highly accomplished Globalization Consultant and Author with a very successful track record of turning international expansion dreams into reality. Throughout her 27-year career, she has been a pioneer in managing worldwide product design, localization, marketing and distribution for successful products sold internationally by such companies as IBM, Netscape Communications, Symantec and Sun Microsystems.

Ray is the co-author of the book, Doing Business in the USA: Marketing and Operations Strategies for Success. She is currently Managing Editor for the Globalization Insider. Ray is fluent in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.

 

Peter Reynolds

Translation Management Consultant, Polish Association Of Translation Agencies

An Irish national based in Warsaw, Peter holds an BSc and an MBA degree from Open University and is a localization and translation industry veteran. Prior to TM-Global he worked at Idiom Technologies Inc. (now SDL PLC). As director of the LSP Partner Program at Idiom, Peter was responsible for making its global LSP partners program a successful and innovative venture. Before Idiom he worked on language technology development for global localization companies: Lionbridge, Bowne Global Solutions and Berlitz GlobalNet. While there, he managed the Dublin development team responsible for BerlitzIT, Elcano, Freeway 2.0 technology solutions and internal project and vendor management tools. Peter has been actively involved — in the development and promotion of standards (notably XLIFF) for more than ten years — mostly at OASIS. Until 2008 (when XLIFF was published) he was Secretary of the XLIFF Technical Committee at OASIS and chaired the Translation Web Services TC. Peter is also involved in OASIS, TILP as well as being the Irish expert to ISO TC 37 (SC2 & SC4) and training auditors for the EN 15038 standard.

 

Dr. Johann Roturier

Principal Research Engineer, Symantec Corporation

Dr. Johann Roturier works as a Principal Research Engineer in Symantec's Localization department. He has been working in the Localization industry for the last five years, focusing on the evaluation, deployment, and integration of new language and translation technologies (such as MT). He obtained his Ph.D from Dublin City University in 2007 in the field of controlled language and machine translation usability. His current research interests include controlled authoring, terminology harvesting, and automated post-editing.

 

David Ruane

Director of WW Engineering, Tek Translation International

David Ruane joined Tek in 2007 with over a decade of global experience in the localization industry. Most recently he was Production Manager at TSG – Translation Services where he was responsible for project planning and the management of all localization projects run by his team. Prior to this, he held management positions at Lionbridge where he successfully managed the Engineering group and the technology used and deployed at the Dublin site. In addition he was a Software Development Engineer with Microsoft as well as an independent consultant where he provided engineering and technical consulting to clients in the localization industry.

Surendra was part of the team that set up the Center of Excellence for Unified Communications and helped build the process, communications, stakeholder management, governance and metrics framework. Prior to Cisco Surendra founded Outsource Methods a venture funded company to build solutions for managing and governing global development, Fiorano where he was Director of Business Development and other companies where he has held Senior Management positions. Dale Schultz

Globalization Test Architect, IBM

Dale Schultz is the Globalization Test Architect in the IBM Globalization Leadership Team and has been involved in globalization software for 17 years. He has worked in South Africa, Germany and the USA.

When he is not delving into subjects such as code pages, time zones and globalization test issues he can be found working on his model train layout, taking photographs, making biltong or camping with mosquitoes.

 

Reinhard Schäler

Director, Localisation Research Centre

Reinhard Schäler has been involved in the localisation industry in a variety of roles since 1987. He is the founder and editor of Localisation Focus - The International Journal of Localisation, and has been an editor and editorial board member of a number of localisation-related publications, such as JOSTRANS. He is a founder and CEO of The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP), a member of the OASIS Technical Committee on the XML-based Localisation Interchange File Format (XLIFF), and has coordinated a localisation stream for the Unicode Conferences. He is the Localisation Area Leader of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL), a major research initiative funded by the Science Foundation Ireland. He is a lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) at the University of Limerick, and the founder and director of the Localisation Research Centre (LRC) at UL, established in 1995 as the information, educational, and research centre for the localization community.

 

Jean Senellart

Director R&D, SYSTRAN

As Director of Research & Development at SYSTRAN, Jean Senellart leads the development path of the company’s hybrid machine translation technology. Jean has expertise in the development of translation products and solutions for the desktop, server and Internet, as well as enterprise-scale projects and customized MT systems. Jean has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Ecole Polytechnique, in Paris, France, as well as a masters and Ph D in Computational Linguistics from Université Paris 7, France. Jean also teaches a course in machine translation at Ecole Polytechnique, remains involved in the localization standardization project, and is a member of the OLIF consortium.

 

David Sommer

Senior Localization Project Manager, Net-Translators

David Sommer is the Senior Localization Project Manager at Net-Translators Ltd. and heads a team responsible for strategic accounts. Previously David worked at the Software Testing Labs of the Standards Institution of Israel. David's direction has helped Net-Translators in process improvement leading to a more streamlined approach which increased quality levels while bringing customer costs down and shortening project cycles. David has a Bsc from the State University of New York and has been involved in the internationalization of Baseball by taking part as a coach in youth baseball tournaments and coaching local teams in the Middle East.

Lew Tarnopol

Lew Tarnopol is a Localization Operations Program Manager at Intel Corporation with over 18 years experience managing localization at companies including Intel, Responsys and Emery Worldwide. Lew manages localization of Intel’s worldwide customer support website and his responsibilities include implementing localization process improvements through the use of technology. In 2006, his support website won LISA’s “Ten Best International Support Websites” award. Lew is a member of LISA, TAUS and is past president of the Willamette Valley Chapter of the STC. Lew has been a guest speaker at Localization World, LISA, Translation Summit, STC, Association of Language Companies, Internet Strategy Forum and IQPC's Website Globalization Conference.

 

Alison Toon

Translation and Localization Manager, Content Management Services, Hewlett-Packard

Alison Toon has worked for Hewlett-Packard in 1991, originally as a usability engineer and technical author with localization responsibilities, for a networks division in Grenoble, France. After several years in this role, Alison moved on to creating, designing and introducing services such as web-based distribution of documentation and software to HP's support engineers.

Alison has been managing her localization program and team since 1997, growing the scope of responsibilities and increasing the team from one to many, and introducing centralized localization workflow tools to HP. The WW Operations CMS Translation and Localization team is now seen as an HP center of expertise for translation workflow.

Since July 2000, Alison has been based in Roseville, California. She manages a worldwide team responsible for the localization of web portals and services, and provides consulting to other HP organizations and program teams.

Before joining HP, Alison worked as an analyst-programmer and as a technical documentation consultant in various companies in the UK and the Netherlands.

 

Jean-François Vanreusel

Sr. Localization Manager, Adobe Systems

Mr. Jean-François Vanreusel leads the Product Localization team in Adobe Systems. This global team of about 100 international engineers and program managers is responsible for driving the localized releases for all Adobe products into as many as 31 languages.

Mr. Vanreusel joined Adobe Systems in 1998. During his tenure in the company, he has directly led localization engineering projects for products such as Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Framemaker, Premiere and GoLive. He also managed the development of globalization technologies and tools to improve product internationalization and the efficiency of the localization process. In addition, Mr. Vanreusel was instrumental in creating Adobe's world-readiness framework to measure, track and plan internationalization support in the company's products.

Mr. Vanreusel holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Computer Science from the Facultés Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix in Namur, Belgium and an MBA from the Haas School of Business in UC Berkeley.

 

Kirti Vashee

Kirti Vashee has more than 25 years experience in successful enterprise software marketing and product development, including significant background with small entrepreneurial as well as larger technology companies such as EMC, Dow Jones and Legato. He has extensive worldwide reseller channel building experience and excellent knowledge of the knowledge management and translation industries. An accomplished speaker who has addressed audiences all over the world, Vashee conducted his undergraduate work in international economics and finance at Bombay University, India and received his MBA from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio.

 

Kara Warburton

Terminologist, IBM

Kara Warburton is head of terminology development for IBM and is a recognized expert in terminology management. Past chair of the LISA Terminology SIG, she is currently the project leader for the TBX submission to ISO and member of the ISO Terminology committee.

 

Andrzej Zydroń

CTO, XML-INTL

Andrzej Zydroń was born in England. Educated in France he started working in IT in 1976. His experience has covered all aspects of computing, with in depth knowledge of Software Engineering, SGML, XML, encoding methodologies and translation memory. Highlights of his career include:

* The design and architecture of the European Patent Office patent data capture system for Xerox Business Services.

* The design and architecture of the Xerox Language Services XTM translation memory system in 1996.

* Author of XML and SGML filters for SDL International's SDLX Translation Suite.

* Assisting the Oxford University Press, the British Council and Oxford University in work on the New Dictionary of the National Biography.

Andrzej Zydroń is a member of the LISA OSCAR Steering Committee. He is the technical architect and editor of the GILT Metrics proposed specification suite, as well as editor of the proposed TBX Link specification. Zydroń also sits on the OASIS technical committees for Translation Web Services, XLIFF and XLIFF segmentation. He is also a W3C invited expert sitting on the W3C ITS technical committee.

As CTO for XML-Intl, he is currently developing the next generation of XML-based text memory systems to reduce authoring and translation costs for documentation. Zydroń is fluent in English, Polish and French.
